How to Store a Power Ice Auger
- 1). Cover the auger cutting blade -- located on the bottom of the drill assembly -- with blade protector, which is typically included with the ice auger when it is purchased.
- 2). Drain fuel from tank. Empty fuel into drain bucket and dispose of it accordingly. According to the operating guide for Jiffy Power Ice Drills, it is important to never store the auger's power head with fuel in the tank indoors, or in a poorly-ventilated enclosure.
- 3). Remove the wire from spark plug. With your fingers, or very carefully with a flat-head screwdriver, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Bend the wire away from the plug to ensure no contact will occur.
- 4). Pull the recoil cord. According to the Strikemaster Ice Auger Operating Manual, it is important to pull the recoil starter handle until resistance is felt. Leave the handle in that position during storage.
- 5). Clean the power head. Use an oiled cloth to wipe down the entire auger power head. Make sure to clean any debris from the cooling fins on the motor.
- 6). Cover the power head. Using a power head cover -- or a canvas sack as an alternative-- wrap the auger power head and secure the cover.
- 7). Keep upright. According to the Jiffy manual, an auger should always be transported and stored in an upright position. Make sure the power head and drill assembly are anchored to prevent damage. Store in a well-ventilated and low-humidity area.
