An injury time spot kick by Darren Bent handed Sunderland an unlikely win over Manchester City The referee handed the Black Cats the penalty, after Micah Richards held back Bent, in the box, when the match had progressed into injury time.
Earlier, Carlos Tevez missed what must rank as the miss of the season.
Yaya Toure played Tevez in and the City striker spooned the ball over, from 12 yards, in a one on one with 'keeper Joe Hart.
Adebayor also had an opportunity to score for City, but his shot was saved by Simon Mignolet in Sunderland's goal.
City had been unbeaten in ten matches, before going down to Sunderland on Sunday.
Beaten by West Brom, last weekend, the Wearsiders needed an exceptional performance to redeem themselves in front of their home fans, against arguably the most talented squad of the Premiership, this season.
Steve Bruce's squad began energetically, and early in the match, they had no fewer than three shots at goal, but Hart managed to keep out the attempts by Bent, Elmohamady and Campbell.
After Tevez's red-faced miss, the Argentinian had a redemption opportunity soon after, when he intercepted a pass from Campbell, 40 yards from goal, and ran with the ball, only to see Mignolet divert the ball.
Mignolet had another brilliant save with seconds to go to the break, when he kept out Yaya Toure's shot from six yards, off a free kick by James Milner.
Sunderland brought pressure on the City goal after the break.
Hart had a lucky escape, following a brilliant cross by Elmohamady.
In another missed opportunity, Bent set up Danny Wellbeck only to have him shoot over.
In a bid to revive City's challenge, Adebayor was brought in for Lescott, who had been ineffective for the most part, in left-back.
Almost immediately, the Togo striker repaid Manager Mancini's faith in him.
Adebayor latched on to Richards' header off Milner's corner, and his volley from six yards needed a brilliant tip over by Mignolet to keep the Black Cats' slate clean.
And even as the two teams appeared headed for shared points, a brilliant cross from Elmohamady found Bent in the box.
Richards held him back, and Bent's spot kick went under Hart as he dived to his left, and earned Sunderland three points for his effort.
