Occupations in Black History
- Blacks were rulers of ancient Egypt for a time. They were pharaohs.
- Blacks have been bank presidents since the early 1900s. Lena Walker was the first black female president of a bank. She founded the Saint Luke Penney Savings bank in Virginia.
- The law has been an occupation pursued by blacks since 1845. Macon Allen was the first black lawyer to be admitted to the bar. He passed the exam in Massachusetts.
- The profession of doctor has been an occupation in black history of the United States since 1783. At that time, James Derham became the first black doctor. He was born into slavery in 1762.
- Academics provided occupations for blacks. Alain Leroy Locke was the first black to win a Rhodes scholarship. He won this honor after receiving his bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1908.
