One of the very best and most comprehensive beer lists in Brazil is found in a restaurant tucked away in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro State. Bräun & Bräun, in Mury, a district of Nova Friburgo, has long been known by cariocas and other Brazilian tourists to have over 300 labels of Brazilian and international beer, served in the right glass, at the right temperature.
The pretty restaurant and bar is also famous for its German-Swiss culinary, which is largely based on fresh ingredients from the area, part of Rio's green belt, and made in-house.
Sit down at one of the polished wooden tables in the Biergarten, the dining room or the veranda and go for a full meal, opening with carpaccio (meat, trout, or even ostrich), then choose from hearty options such as Eisbein or a variety of sausages such as a type filled with buffalo cheese and smoked boar sausage. There are also many fish dishes, including pirana soup. Desserts include banana turnovers with pepper jelly and cheesecake.
On cold mountain nights, the restaurant is the perfect place to indulge in a Nova Friburgo tradition from its Swiss founders. Bräun & Bräun serves several types of fondue and raclette - made in machines imported from Switzerland, mind you.
