How to Look & Sound Professional With a Live Band

25
    • 1). Use professional and quality equipment. For example, you do not want to use a small practice amplifier for a live show. Check the sound of any amplifiers or instruments you use to obtain the sound you want.

    • 2). Call the venue before your show and ask what equipment is provided. For example, a PA system is needed for an ideal live sound, and if one is not provided at the venue, you will have to bring your own (or borrow from another band). Also ask if a sound engineer is on staff.

    • 3). Talk to the sound engineer. Good communication is key, and you want a positive relationship with the person handling your sound at a venue. All venues are different, and you will sound different in each environment. If a sound engineer is not provided, you may have to hire your own.

    • 4). Perform a sound check before your show. Try a few different songs with varying levels of volume if possible, and continue to talk to the sound engineer during the check. Ask for vocals in the monitors if you cannot hear them, or ask for the snare drum sound to be lowered if it is too loud.

    • 5). Talk to your bandmates about dress and presentation. You do not necessarily need to dress in the same clothes, but using a similar style or color palette can be easy on the audience's eyes. Consider the style of your music and what dress would be appropriate.

    • 6). Prepare materials to give out to audience members. You will come across as more professional if you have flyers, CDs or items for sale. This technique is also a way to get the audience to remember you.
