Video: How to Add Base Support for Upright Bookshelf

8

Video Transcript

In this video clip, we will be adding our base supports and our cleats. If we take a look at the bottom of our bookshelf, there is a couple areas that need to be addressed for stability purposes. Across the back here, let's say if you were to put a lot of heavy books or even if someone were to step on this from the inside, this could potentially pull away a little bit and potentially damage the project. So what we are going to do is install a back support piece going across the bottom and it is basically just going to act as another leg. In addition another weakness is if we were to drag this across the floor and this were to catch on the carpet, this could potentially pull away, maybe crack some of the joints. So what we are going to do is add a little tiny cleat board that will connect all these pieces just to add to the stability of our bookshelves. For my back support piece I've just taken a chunk of 2x4 and cut it down to size and now I am going to glue it and screw it in place. And I've drilled pilot holes so my wood doesn't split out. For my cleats to add stability to my sides and this front kick plate, I've just cut a 3/4 x 3/4 piece of scrap wood. I am going to glue it and pin nail into place.
