How to Compare Ionic Air Purifiers to HEPA Air Purifiers

6
    • 1). Consider the frequency that filters need to be changed or cleaned. HEPA filters can last anywhere from six months to five years before changing is required. Ionic filters require occasional cleaning depending on indoor air quality. When these removable permanent filters get dirty, particles landing on the ion plate generate zapping noises. A considerable amount of down time may be required while you're washing your ionic filter. A good filter is critical to efficient operation of both HEPA and ionic air purifiers.

    • 2). Consider the particle size that the air purifier can filtrate. HEPA filters are generally considered best for removing dust and allergens out of the air. Ionic air purifiers remove dust also, just not as effectively.

    • 3). Find out if the air purifier produces any residue or by-product. Ionic air filters typically produce ozone when they charge dust particles. The ozone can accumulate in your environment and you can smell it. Additionally, a black sooty residue can build up on the walls surrounding the ionic unit.

    • 4). Listen to how loud the unit sounds when turned on. HEPA units generally have low fan noise and are quiet. Ionic air purifiers may or may not have a fan. Loud zapping noises may occur when particles come into contact with the ion plate.

    • 5). Consider reliability of the unit. Look at the construction of the unit and the type of materials used. Examine the casing and controls to determine the level of quality that you want for your unit.

    • 6). Consider the size and appearance of the unit and how it may look in the home or office environment. Look at the general appearance to determine if this unit is right for your decor or if it will clash. If your have tight space considerations, think about where you will set the unit.

    • 7). Check for installation costs. Some ionic plates are built into a wall with additional costs incurred.

    • 8). Sum up the total cost of each air purifier unit under consideration. A range of inexpensive home units and expensive commercial models are available in both technologies.
