Disney"s Topiaries - Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival"s Green Giants

10
No one would debate the beauty and splendor of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival that takes place at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Wandering sunny gardens that are in full bloom really helps you to appreciate not only the festival, but also the park that hosts it - Epcot is often overlooked and underappreciated by Disney-goers.
What adds more to this occasion than the typical flower gardens and HGTV sponsor stands are the topiaries.
Over 100 different topiaries of every variety fill the park in the shape of whimsical Disney characters.
You can see the classic favorites, like Minnie and Mickey, Donald and Daisy, or Goofy or you can enjoy the new topiaries, which enjoy their premiere right at the entrance of the world showcase.
New topiaries include Buzz and Woody from the Toy Story Trilogy, in addition to Lightning McQueen, everyone's favorite racecar from Cars and Cars 2.
Topiary History Walt Disney himself thought of the idea of creating "living" Disney character topiaries while he was touring Europe.
Since their installment in Disneyland in 1963, Disney has used the minds of the brilliant Disney landscape artists in combination with the creative and talented minds of the animators to create 3 different types of topiaries: traditional, sphagnum, and trained ivy.
Types of Topiaries The first thing that you will want to know about topiaries is that they are alive.
They cannot simply be glued and cut and painted into whatever shape or form is required.
They have to be coaxed and sculpted and trimmed and watered with loving care.
Traditional topiaries, made from shrubs, are sculpted and carefully pruned into shape.
This process takes 3 - 10 years.
Traditional topiaries are the type that people are probably the most familiar with, though they are the least common at Walt Disney World Resort.
Sphagnum topiaries are created by making a shape out of wire and moss, and then supplementing it with flowers, vines, and other plants to fill out and finish the shape or character.
Trained Ivy topiaries are made by weaving a skeletal form out of wire, planting ivy, and helping it to grow around the wire.
A combination of these two methods is preferred by Disney artists to create the modern topiaries that are on display at Walt Disney World Resort.
The older ones are maintained in the off-season and come back each year until they are retired.
Because of the hard work of the Disney landscape and topiary artists, you will not regret a visit to Walt Disney World Resort during the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.
With just a couple of the magnificent floral creations on display, you can literally take hundreds of pictures.
In the process, you will become intoxicated with the fresh and fragrant scent of the plants.
The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is truly a completely unique and unforgettable experience offered by Walt Disney World Resort.
