How to Use Paper Backdrops

9
    • 1). Gather various size sheets of paper. High-quality thick paper helps to create a more structured background. Scour craft supply and art shops for interesting patterned backgrounds. The size of your paper will depend on your subject matter. You can photograph small items such a pottery on 11-by-17-inch pieces of paper. Human subjects will need at least 2-by-5 feet of paper, depending on the angle you choose.

    • 2). Hang larger sheets of paper from binder clips and string for human subjects. Tie the string to nails in the wall or large objects in the room for stability. This process works well for head shots and standing poses.

    • 3). Create a seamless floor-to-ceiling look by using paper long enough to curve under the subject. All aspects of your subject and paper should stay within your photography frame for the best results.

    • 4). Use books and tape to prop paper up on a tabletop display for small objects. Curve the paper in half without bending. Prop the top half of your paper on the books while taping the bottom half to the table.

    • 5). Lay a 12-by-12-inch sheet of scrapbook paper on a flat surface in front of a window. Arrange your objects on the paper. Stand on a chair and photograph from above.
