Garage Doors: Key Price Differentiators You Should Take Note

15
Are you itching to replace your dated garage door, but clueless on how much it will cost? The answer will vary depending on your needs and preferences. With today"s garage doors, prices can go as low as $300 or reach up to $3,000. Some premium designs even exceed $6,000.

Here are some guidelines to help you as you shop around.

Material talks

Materials determine to a large extent the price of a garage door. Generally, those made of metal or plastic are at the lower end, while hardwood versions are the most expensive.

"Steel designs are not only economical but also rust-resistant. In addition, you will not need to repaint the exterior as often. The catch is this type dents easily. But repairing the dent, not so easy.

"A bit pricier than steel counterparts, vinyl doors are not as prone to denting. Plus, models are often finished in visually appealing wood-grain patterns.

"Aluminum designs are slightly cheaper than those in steel. On top of that, constructions are lightweight and inherently rustproof.

"Wood composite is the "green" alternative. Since recycled materials are used, this kind retains a modest price tag. The exterior surface may require painting, but at least you get to coat it in a color that complements your home"s faade.

"Versions made of hemlock, cedar, mahogany and other high-grade wood species are priced the steepest. Much of what you pay for is aesthetic value. Custom-made, constructions are often architecturally superb. Be wary, however, of cracking or warping over time.

Size matters

With dimensions, it is simple. Prices increase with size. The smallest choice for standard constructions is 8x7ft. The 16x7ft versions are twice more expensive. Rates for 9x7 and 8x8ft models are 10 and 20 percent higher, respectively. Those at the uppermost end of the spectrum measure 9x8 or 16x8ft. For irregular options such as 18x18ft designs, expect an additional charge.

DIY or expert help

Installation is one area you can save or spend on. Hiring a professional to put together your garage door will cost you at least $100. Have extra cash ready if it is a custom design.

The additional fee notwithstanding, you are assured that the project will be completed fast and effectively. Experts often also take care of the removal and disposal of the original one.

But you can always opt to do it yourself (of course, with two or three people helping out) to curb expenses. But you need to be able and ready. Are you handy with tools? Have you read the instruction manual? Are safety precautions being taken?

Tailor-fit designs

With garage doors, you can have certain design aspects modified to your taste. This, however, will add to the base price. The how much of it will depend on the upgrade you request for. For instance, you can specify that instead of a simple, plain exterior you want a sculpted panel and horizontal ribbing. Glass inserts for windows may also be incorporated across the top.

The extras

Garage doors are offered with a variety of accessories. If there is still room in your budget, you can have one or two included in your purchase. Among your choices are an automatic garage door opener, which will cost you an additional $130 to $150. Keychain-sized programmable transmitters raise quotes by $15 to $50.

Garage doors are an important investment that can serve you well for years. So do not rush into buying the first model you lay your eyes on. Take time to assess which material, size, design and features suit your home. Decide on whether you will be installing it yourself or hiring the help of a professional. A little homework is always key when scouting for the model that will fit your budget, taste and needs.
