DIY Wooden Cross
- Decide on a ratio and cut the wood to fit the ratio. Crosses are usually either a 1:2 ratio or a 1:3 ratio. There aren't any rules for which ratio you should use in which situation. It can be totally up to you. After you choose the ratio, go ahead and cut your wood to fit it. It can be as tall or small as you would like.
- Assemble the cross using a couple of steps, so that you know it is secure. First, measure the point where the two pieces should meet. Whichever ratio you used, you'll want to attach the cross in the same way. Measure up two-thirds of the distance on what will be your vertical piece. This is where you attach your cross piece.
Set your cross piece on top of the vertical piece so the cross piece is divided cleanly in half. Then use four screws, one in each corner of the square that is made by the intersecting pieces.
Secure your cross with twine as well. This will keep it secure if the screws should fail. For a different look, don't use any screws at all, use only twine. Wrap the twine around many times in a crisscross pattern to cover the two pieces until they are secure, and tie it tightly.
