  A hybrid dog is bred from mixing two purebred dogs of different breeds. Hybrid dogs are also referred to as designer dogs, and have become popular for their unique personalities and looks. Unlike purebred dogs, which are consistent in their traits due to generations of breeding, hybrids dogs can vary widely in appearance even within the same litter. Hybrid dogs are considered to be sturdier and healthier than purebred dogs, since they acquire the characteristics of two separate breeds.
  
  

Jack Russell Terrier

  The Jack Russell is a spry, lively terrier known for its intelligence and strong hunting instincts. The Jack Russell enjoys playing with toys and has substantial energy for running, jumping and climbing. As with many small dogs, a Jack Russell can exhibit Small Dog Syndrome if not adequately trained. Small Dog Syndrome is demonstrated in dogs who believe they are the alpha pack leader and may give rise to dominant or willful behavior. However, with training and plenty of exercise, a Jack Russell terrier can be a loving, devoted pet. Jack Russell terriers have a life span of approximately 15 years, and require very little grooming due to their short, coarse coat.
  
  

Bichon Frise

  Bichon Frise dogs are lively and affectionate companions, known for their charm and loyalty. They are obedient dogs requiring a patient but firm owner who does not tolerate inappropriately dominant behavior such as Small Dog Syndrome. The Bichon does not shed and is hypoallergenic, and therefore requires frequent grooming to maintain the dog's fur. Bichons are descendants of the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle, and were registered by the American Kennel Club in 1972. They have a life span of approximately 15 years.
  
  

Appearance

  Given that both the Jack Russell and the Bichon Frise are small dogs, it is certain that the Bichon Russell puppy will be less than 20 lbs. and around 12 inches in height. However, that is where the similarities end. The Bichon Frise has a fluffy outer coat of fur and a soft under coat, and is hypoallergenic. The Bichon may be white, cream or apricot colored, but generally is entirely the same color. The Jack Russell has a short, coarse coat and is at least 51 percent white in color, with patches of brown, tan or black. The hybrid puppy may therefore be fluffy or coarse, and may be a single color or patchy.

  Both the Bichon Frise and the Jack Russell breeds are known for their lively and spunky personalities. The Bichon is a sociable dog, good with children and other animals, and requires moderate exercise. The Jack Russell can be feisty and willful with other animals if not trained properly, and must have brisk and thorough exercise on a daily basis. The hybrid puppy will likely be charming and friendly, but may vary in energy level and ability to deal with other animals in the household. As with all puppies, early training and consistent rules will help bring out the best traits in any breed.
