How to Test a Home for Allergens
- 1). Purchase a home testing kit. Most kits are available for purchase online through a standard search for home allergen kits. Some allergen specific kits, like testing just for mold, are available at speciality hardware stores.
- 2). Read and follow the directions carefully. You want to make sure you are following the steps precisely, so there is no contamination of samples.
- 3). Obtain a dust sample from either a table, desk or shelves and place it in the supplied envelope or container. Some kits come with a specimen collector that attaches to your vacuum cleaner should you want to check your carpeting or rugs.
- 4). Send the sample off to be analyzed by the company. Most results will be back in seven to 10 business days. Some will mail the results to you while others may give you a special code to call and get your results.
- 5). Evaluate the results and decide what steps you can take to rid your home of the specific allergens.
