    • The javelina looks somewhat like a wild hog or boar but smaller. The javelina has a white collar which distinguishes it from other similar-looking animals. javelinas are belong to the tayassuidae family, though they are distantly related to the hog.

    Legalities

    • Everyone 16 and over must have a hunting license in Texas. The season is open all year long in South Texas, where most javelinas live, while hunting season occurs from October through February in the northern half of the state. Hunters are allowed to harvest two javelinas per year.

    Areas

    • A ranch near La Pryor has an annual shootout for bow hunters who hunt javelina. There are several hunting ranches in the area where you may lease land. You may also go with an outfitter or guide who can direct your hunt and take care of the planning details. Most of the land in the area is privately owned, so there is very little public land.
