Foster Grandparents Program

9

Definition: In the United States, the term foster grandparents most often refers to the Foster Grandparents Program (FPG). Open to those 55 and older, this program matches volunteers with disadvantaged and disabled youth in venues such as schools, hospitals and day care centers. Foster Grandparents serve from 15 to 40 hours a week. If they meet certain income guidelines, they may receive a small, tax-free hourly stipend.

The Foster Grandparent Program was initiated in 1965 under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. It operated under various auspices until 1994, when it became part of the Senior Corps, a division of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
