Surveillance & Security Systems
- Surveillance cameras may help to deter crime. The video from the surveillance cameras is often transmitted to a computer or television and is often recorded. Both indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras are available.
- Security systems have detectors to monitor points of entry into a building such as windows and doors. If an entrance is breached while the alarm is activated, the alarm will sound. Some systems have silent alarms that simply alert authorities but do not have an audible alarm.
- Surveillance and security systems may be deterrents by themselves, but they are most effective if they are monitored by a security company. If surveillance is monitored, the security company may be able to prevent a crime in progress, and monitored security companies will alert police if the security alarm is sounded.
- Surveillance is commonly used in public buildings including schools, government offices and in outdoor areas of public housing. Many businesses also use surveillance cameras. Cameras are useful in recording visitors to the building.
Security systems are often used to protect private homes and many businesses use them to secure the building during non-business hours. - There are some privacy concerns regarding the use of surveillance cameras. In general, cameras are permitted in public areas including public streets. Surveillance is permitted in the work place, but employees must be informed of the installation of surveillance cameras.
