Installing a Power Attic Fan Roof Mount
- 1). Go to the fuse box and trip the circuit breaker to discontinue electric power to the attic fan. Place the power attic fan roof mount on a work surface face down. Strip the ends of the two wires attached to its bottom with a wire strippers -- use a ruler to measure a 1/2-inch length at the end to strip.
- 2). Locate the attic fan's cover grille on the roof. Remove the screws from around the grille with a Phillips screwdriver. Place the screws in your pocket to use with the mount later. Pull the grille off and place it aside.
- 3). Run the wires from the mount through the hole that the grille was covering. Remove the grille from the back of the attic fan, using the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the grille off. Pull the wires from the hole down the inside left side of the fan. Tape the wires to the side of the fan with strips of duct tape.
- 4). Loosen the two screws on an edge of the fan's motor, using the Phillips screwdriver or a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver, depending on the make.
- 5). Wind the end of the black wire from the mount a quarter turn around the screw that already has a black wire on it. Wind the end of the other wire from the mount (typically, this is white) a quarter turn around the other screw. Tighten the two screws. Place the grille back on the fan and reattach the screws.
- 6). Place the power attic fan roof mount against the roof, over the hole. Run the wood screws, taken from your pocket, through the pre-drilled holes in the mount and into the roof, using an electric screwdriver to drive the screws deeper than if using a Phillips screwdriver by hand.
- 7). Apply a drop of silicone sealant to each screw head to insulate the roof from the elements. Sweep the area clean from around the grille, using a broom. Restore the electric power to start the thermostat-controlled fan rotating and to activate the motor in the mount so that the slats are opened.
