How to Remove 12X12 Tiles
- 1). Put on safety goggles as shards of broken tile or grout could injure your eyes. Protect your hands from the sharp tile edges with heavy leather work gloves.
- 2). Place a mason chisel into the grout line along the edge of a 12-inch-by-12-inch tile. Strike the mason chisel with a 3-lb. sledge hammer to break the grout line. Continue to use the mason chisel and sledge hammer to break the gout line around the entire tile.
- 3). Position the mason chisel in the center of the 12-inch-by-12-inch tile. Hit the top of the chisel with the sledge hammer to break the tile into pieces. Discard the pieces of broken tile.
- 4). Place a floor scraper against the edges of the tiles adjacent to the tile you removed with the mason chisel. Use enough force to slide the blade of the scraper between the subfloor and the remaining 12-inch-by-12-inch tiles on the floor to break and lift them from the floor.
- 5). Pick up the larger pieces of tile you removed from the floor. Sweep up the remainder of the broken tile with a broom and discard the broken tile pieces. Continue to scrape the floor with the floor scraper to remove the remaining mortar and grout stuck to the floor.
- 6). Sweep the remaining debris from the floor. Vacuum the subfloor to remove any dust and debris the broom missed.
