Economics College Courses

• A degree in economics prepares you for many jobs. This is due to the variety of courses that you may be required to take before graduation. Your education in micro and macroeconomics, political economy and banking, for example, is valuable to an employer who seeks a candidate with analytical skills.The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that economists who are strong in math, statistics and computer science may be more desirable to a company.
  
  

Corporations

• As a graduate in economics, you may choose to work in the corporate world. With a bachelor's degree, you can expect to enter the workforce in an entry-level position; but with more experience and, possibly, an advanced degree, you will be able to tackle higher-level duties and positions. The BLS explains that beginning positions normally consist of duties that deal with microeconomics, such as projecting sales or analyzing the market to always be ahead of the competition.
  
  

Government

• The government hires economists to work at many agencies and departments. Georgetown University lists the Department of Commerce, Federal Reserve Board and the Department of Labor as a few of the public organizations who have a need for an entry-level economist. The government may be where your classes in statistics and your ability to analyze data will be most valued. At government agencies, you may perform duties, such as surveys, that collect data and analyze the data about trends in the United States.
  
  

Consulting

• A job with a consulting firm may be higher profile than some of the other economics fields. The BLS states that these positions may be responsible for data analysis that is published in periodicals and newspapers. You may be called upon to testify at a hearing or lawsuit due to your research of policy and commodities markets. Once you gain experience, you may consider opening your own consulting business and helping clients with forecasting the needs of their target markets and performing a variety of other duties to help business owners increase sales.
