How to Prune Neglected Shrubs
- 1). Cut about 1/3 of all stems near the ground for renewal pruning. Choose the oldest, woodiest stems. This will direct more of the plant's energy to the remaining branches.
- 2). Cut the entire plant about 6 to 10 inches from the ground for a drastic, rejuvenation pruning. This will encourage the development of vigorous new shoots.
- 3). Watch for pests and disease, and make sure your heavily-pruned bush is getting enough water. Fertilize according to the recommendations for your bush.
- 4). Remove about half of the bush's new shoots in mid-summer for rejuvenation pruning. Head back the remaining shoots, cutting about ¼ inch above an outwardly-pointing bud to stimulate growth.
- 5). Repeat renewal pruning each year for three years, removing 1/3 of the bush each time. This treatment will completely replace your shrub over time.
