Different Types of Trailers and Their Uses
You would be surprised to know that there are a dizzying number of trailers that are buzzing up and down the highway carrying all types of goods. While to the layman, they might seem all the same, they have very specific advantages, disadvantages and uses. Whether it is Zoomlion cranes or Skel trailers, all is not what it looks like! More often than not, what we call the truck is not a single load carrying vehicle. The trucks are simply the powerhouse that pulls the load across distances. The different types of trailers are attached to the truck making transportation possible. The good thing about this system, a single truck can be attached to different types of trailers. Let us take a look at the different types of trailers and its uses.
• The Box Trailer – These are the fully enclosed type of trailer and a common sight on the road. They are spacious enough to house all types of materials and are the best mode of transport in bad weather. However, it is noticed that the box trailer is mostly used for carrying perishable goods. Since it is enclosed it can be fitted with refrigeration which allows it to carry goods along long distances without the fear of spoilage. Some even have the option of side loading which makes the loading period a little easier and quicker.
• The Tank Trailers – These are specifically used for transporting liquid. They can be spotted by their distinguishable cylindrical shape. The multicoated body, the ability to maintain a certain temperature and pressure inside the tanker makes them ideal for carrying highly volatile substance like petroleum as well as highly perishable item like milk. Due to the liquid contents of the tanker (which move more than the solid), only specialized drivers are allowed to drive oil tankers to minimize accidents.
• Flatbed Tankers – These are the most versatile type of trailers. They are used to carry all types of loads from vehicles, to metal beams to anything else you can think of. Since they are open, they have a little wiggle room and can carry something that is slightly wider than the trailer, though it is not an ideal situation. There are numerous types of flatbed trailers available including goose-necked, extendable, Skel trailer, etc. The great thing about extendable trailer is that, like the Zoomlion cranes, their length can be increased to as and when needed.
• Livestock Trailer – Carrying living beings is a lot different from carrying inanimate objects, that is why, the livestock trailers are different from normal trailers. For starters, they are a lot better ventilated than the other types of trailers. If livestock were to be transported via enclosed trailers like the box trailer, most if not all of the animals would perish. Moreover, these trailers have subdivisions in the enclosed space like pens so that the animals are kept separate while transporting. The bigger horse trailers are used for transporting horses as well as other big and heavy animals comfortably, and they all have some sort of ramp for easy loading and unloading.
Machines like the Zoomlion cranes and Skel trailers are being used constantly around us and yet we do not notice them too much. These different types of trailers might give you a slightly better idea about them.
