The 1991 Ford Escort GT came with two engine options--a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine code 8 and a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine code J. You can identify the engine option by locating the eighth digit of the VIN number located on the driver's side window on the lower corner. This digit tells you which engine you have in your vehicle. After identifying the engine option, you can determine oil specifications for your vehicle. - Factory recommendations for oil in both engines is 4.1 quarts of SAE 5w30 oil. For higher mileage engines or extended performance, Ford recommends using a high-mileage or synthetic oil.
- The 1.8-liter engine uses a WIX 51365 oil filter and the 1.9-liter engine needs a WIX 51516 oil filter. Other manufacturer's equivalent filters are acceptable. Consult manufacturer websites or your auto parts store for options.
- The 1.8-liter engine drain plug torques to 22 feet-pounds of torque whereas the 1.9-liter is more flexible at 15 to 25 feet-pounds of torque. Always inspect the drain plug and gasket for damage when removing and installing. Replacement plugs and gaskets are available at your local auto parts store.
