DIY Camera Case Sewing
- 1). Calculate the total length around of the camera case. Measure the side panel and double this measurement. Measure across the front and back of the camera. Combine these measurements. Add an additional 2 inches for seam allowances. This is the width of the camera case
- 2). Determine the dimensions for the height of the camera case. Measure the front or back of the camera from top to bottom. Double the measurement. Measure the width of the top of the camera between the front and back panels. Double this measurement. Combine these measurements and add another 2 inches for seam allowances. This is the height of the camera case.
- 3). Draw a rectangle on thick paper, using the dimensions for the camera case. Use the height measurement for the sides of the rectangle and the width for the top and bottom. Add a half-circle over the top edge of the rectangle, spanning the entire width. It will be folded down to make the front flap of the camera case. The height of the half-circle should be shorter than the front of your camera, otherwise it will hang off the front of the case. Cut the template from the thick paper.
- 4). Trace the template onto the fabric pieces for the inside and outside of the case and the batting with a fabric marker. Cut out these pieces.
- 1). Place one piece of fabric on a flat surface, right-side up. Lay the second piece of fabric on top, right-side down. Place the on top of the two fabric pieces. Match up all sides and pin together.
- 2). Sew along the rounded edge and the two long sides of the fabric, leaving the shortest end open. Remove the pins as you sew. Turn the case inside out at the open end, moving the batting to the middle of the two fabric pieces.
- 3). Fold in the fabric edges on the open end, covering the batting in the middle and creating a clean edge. Pin the edge closed. Sew along the edge, securing the tucked fabric. Remove the pins as you sew.
- 4). Lay the rectangle on a flat surface with the half circle at the top and the fabric for the inside of the case is facing up. Place the camera in the middle of the rectangle. Fold the bottom of the rectangle up over the front of the camera, creating a pouch. The bottom of the rectangle should be slightly above the top of the camera.
- 5). Pin the two folded sides in place. Fold the rounded top of the case down over the camera. The half-circle flap should fit just over the front of the case and fasten with a button. Adjust the folds, if necessary.
- 6). Adjust the sewing machine to lengthen the stitch for the thicker material. Attach a walking foot if the normal presser foot hangs low. Sew along each pinned side of the rectangle, attaching the sides and closing the case. Remove the pins as you sew. If the material does not fit under a walking foot, it may be necessary to hand-stitch the side seams.
- 7). Set the sewing machine to the buttonhole setting. Sew a button hole in the middle of the half-circle, about 1 inch from the rounded edge. Cut through the center of the buttonhole.
- 8). Fold the top of the case down over the front. Make a mark through the buttonhole with a fabric marker. Hand-sew a button onto the mark to fasten the finished case.
