Proper Aerosol Paint Storage
- Store aerosol paint cans in a flammables cabinet, if possible. If you do not have a flammables cabinet, keep aerosol cans away from any other flammable or combustible material. Ensure aerosol cans are clearly labeled and out of reach of children. Do not store aerosol cans in extreme temperatures.
- If you need to store large quantities of aerosol paint, you may be legally required to use a flammables cabinet. In Oregon, for example, you must use a flammables cabinet if you have 25 gallons or more of paint.
- Do not buy more aerosol paint than you need, and always finish old cans before opening new cans. This minimizes the amount of paint you need to store.
- Only empty cans can be recycled because leftover aerosol paint is considered hazardous waste. Do not puncture aerosol cans unless you are trained in using a puncturing device. Remove plastic aerosol caps and take empty aerosol cans to your local recycling center.
