    Disk Cleanup Tasks

    • The Windows operating system has a feature that creates error reports when something happens to unexpectedly or improperly shut down the computer or a Windows program. Glitches and some program freezes may also generate an error report. These are stored on the computer until you remove them. Do so with disk cleanup. The system also stores temporary files that are a product of your web surfing. Extra unnecessary setup files and recycle bin contents are also stored in the computer. When you delete texts and certain files, they stay in the recycle bin until it is emptied. Disk cleanup will clear all of this excess material out of your hard drive.

    Frequency

    • For users who do not perform frequent web searches, downloads, streaming and other activities like photo sharing, Microsoft recommends performing a disk cleanup once a week. However, the University College London (UCL) Institute of Archaeology urges its light users to perform a disk cleanup once a month. This also goes for people who use their computers for text-based tasks like intensive word processing. UCL says that gamers, heavy web surfers and downloaders, and others who utilize graphics, photos and other larger files may want to look at performing a disk cleanup once a week. You can decide depending on your computer. When it begins to slow down, freeze or have trouble opening files, the hard drive may be too cluttered for the system to properly function. That is the time to perform a disk cleanup.
