A lot of prep work is involved in painting a vehicle, one of the most important tasks is sanding.
It helps the vehicle in preventing rough and uneven paint.
This is a challenging task.
An auto repair shop will usually do this task but if you are intending to save money by going DIY style, then a good foundation for the paint has to be ensured by learning to sand a car in a proper manner.

Materials Needed -Sander pad -Power sander -Sand paper (#120, #320, #200 and #600 Grit) -Air compressor -Dry cloth -Wood block Directions Every spot of the car where the primer is to be applied should be properly sanded.
This is important for ensuring a smooth surface.
If the car is in a fairly good condition, then there is no need for sanding down the bare metal because this is only recommended for cars having rust.
Those who already know to sand a car, they would have to remove all the external plastic and foam parts from the body.
This will help to make the sanding much easier preventing the parts from suffering damages during the process.
Removing the running, head and tail lights are also important.
If you are nervous about any other parts like emblems and logos that can't be removed, then the better option is cover them with tape.
For removal of rust, hard scratches and other materials that ruin the car's surface, a good option is to use a power sander.
Sanding should be done in a straight motion, doing it in a circular motion is not recommended because it will show sanding marks through the final finish that no one wants.
Line it with a back-and-forth motion for prevention of scratches.
If there is a lot of surface damage or rust, then sander pads will be required.
For having a safe environment during the sanding task, it is recommended to always wear dust mask and safety goggles to prevent respiratory distress or other injuries.
It is recommended to work in a well-ventilated area.
For removing other dirt on the surface and the dust produced by sanding, use an air compressor.
It is helpful in doing a thorough cleaning as the air reaches deep into the small spaces that traps dust particles that will possibly interfere during the final finishing.
The final part of sanding is the most physical.
Wrap 120-grit sandpaper around a wooden block and move over less accessible areas and any of the areas that could have been possibly missed by the sander.
Do the sanding in a straight line.
Use 200-grit sandpaper for removing fine scratches, then use 320-grit and 600-grit sandpaper for giving a good smooth finish.
Air compressor would have to be used for removing any dust produced.
Use a dry cloth to wipe the surface clean before closely examining the body.
Now, sand and use air compressor for removing the dust until you are completely satisfied with the work.
Tips and Precautions -Do the sanding job of the car in a well-ventilated area.
-Always wear a protective gear like goggles and dust mask while doing the work.
-Make sure to sand straight, this will prevent scratches.
-Thoroughly sanding a car can take a few days.
