How to Replace the Hazard Switch on a 1999 Tahoe
- 1). Turn the Tahoe's engine off and disconnect the battery with a socket wrench. Wait 15 minutes before continuing in order to disable the air bags.
- 2). Remove the two screws from the rear of the steering wheel with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift off the steering wheel cover with a slotted screwdriver. Disconnect the horn's electrical connector by squeezing the tab and pulling it off.
- 3). Uninstall the steering wheel nut in the center of the steering wheel. Lift the steering wheel off of the steering column with the wheel puller.
- 4). Remove the knee panel by taking off its two screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the two Torx screws from the lower steering column cover with a Torx screwdriver. Remove the two Torx screws from the upper cover. Pry off both covers with a slotted screwdriver.
- 5). Remove the two Torx screws from the faulty switch and disconnect its electrical connector. Pull it out of the steering column. Install the replacement switch into the column and reinstall its connector and the two Torx screws.
- 6). Reattach the steering column covers and the knee panel.
- 7). Reattach the steering wheel to the steering column. Reassemble the steering wheel and reconnect the battery.
