Transportation Accessibility and the Importance of Streamlined Services

34
Accessible public transportation is crucial in providing access to employment, health care, education, community services and activities necessary for daily living. Its importance is underscored by the variety of transportation programs that have been created in conjunction with health and human services programs. This is further emphasized by the significant federal investment in accessible public transportation systems throughout the nation.

Ironically, for most people who need transportation help, the creation of more programs has resulted in several unintended consequences. Transportation services are often fragmented, underutilized or difficult to navigate, and can be costly because of inconsistent, redundant and often restrictive federal and state program rules and regulations. And, in some cases, narrowly focused programs leave service gaps. In such instances, transportation services are simply not available to meet certain needs. These basic transportation needs are integral to the lives of many Americans, including travel for groceries, to the bank, and other important errands.

The Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility (CCAM) recognizes that transportation can be the major obstacle for people with disabilities, older adults, children and youth, and other populations that need various social and health services. Interagency partnerships are essential to coordinate travel needs to help increase the quality of life for these populations as well as for agencies to provide their services effectively and efficiently.

United We Ride (UWR) is a CCAM federal interagency initiative aimed at improving the availability, quality and efficient delivery of transportation services for older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with lower incomes. UWR recognizes that transportation is not a choice but a necessity. Without ready access to transportation, simple daily activities for many Americans may be a challenge or nearly impossible to accomplish. UWR is committed to supporting a comprehensive, coordinated, human-service transportation system through its education, technical assistance and funding initiatives.

Ensuring the smooth and continued operation of various organizations and nonprofits assisting in these matters is a crucial component of building happier communities and a more prosperous nation. Through various services for care providers (e.g. business interruption/continuity coverage, comprehensive workers comp, etc.), these crucial community and national organizations maintain the very fabric of our free society. And such organizations are even more susceptible to liability than economic downturn. Thus the importance of care providers insurance, program insurance, senior services insurance, and other comprehensive solutions that keep noble causes alive.
