How Can Pool Water Be Purified?
- 1). Prepare the storage containers for the purified water. These can be anything you would normally store food or drinks in, including recycled plastic or glass bottles and jugs. Avoid containers that were used to store milk or fruit juices. Clean the containers thoroughly with dish soap and hot water. Sanitize them with a solution of 1 teaspoon of bleach to 1 quart of water. Allow the containers to dry.
- 2). Pour the water through a clean shirt or cheesecloth to filter out any debris. Pour the filtered water into a clean pot and bring it up to a boil. Allow the water to boil for one minute, or minutes if you are more than 1 mile above sea level.
- 3). Pour the water into the prepared storage containers. Add 1/8 teaspoon of bleach to every 1 gallon of water. This will help prevent the water from becoming contaminated. Cap the containers, shake and allow to sit for 30 minutes.
