Planting Maple Tree Seeds
- 1). Moisten enough perlite or sand to completely envelop the maple seeds. Place it in the plastic bag and insert the seeds into the medium. Secure the top of the bag and place it in the refrigerator for 90 to 120 days.
- 2). Pour equal parts of perlite and seed-starting mix into the planting pots. Water the soil well, allowing the excess water to drain from the bottom of the pots.
- 3). Remove the bag from the refrigerator and plant the seeds, 1/4 inch in depth, in the pots.
- 4). Place the pots in an area that is warm (65 to 75 degrees F) and receives light, but out of direct sunlight.
- 5). Transplant your maple seedlings into their permanent location in the landscape in the spring. Dig a hole twice the diameter but the same depth of the pot in which the saplings are growing. Place the roots into the hole and backfill with soil. Tamp down around the base of the sapling.
- 6). Add a 3-inch layer of organic mulch, keeping it 2 inches from the trunk of the sapling.
Water the area until the water puddles.
