Proper Care of a Cast-Iron Skillet

33

    Seasoning

    • 1). Scoop some lard from the container with a thick stack of paper towels. Lightly coat both the inside and outside of the skillet.

    • 2). Put the skillet in the oven. Bake it at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Put another pan on the shelf underneath to catch any drippings.

    • 3). Put on oven mitts and take the pan out of the oven and dump excess grease. Put it back in the oven and bake at 300 F for two hours.

    • 4). Repeat this process three or four times to strengthen the seasoning bond.

    Use and Care

    • 1). Rinse the skillet after cooking while it's still hot. Run it under hot water and use a pan scraper to scrape off excess food. Wash the skillet with a rag and hot water.

    • 2). Remove burnt-on food from the skillet with coarse salt. Sprinkle coarse salt inside the pan and scrub with a non-metallic scrub brush. Rinse and dry the pan thoroughly.

    • 3). Keep the lid off your skillet while storing. When the lid is on, moisture can get trapped inside which can lead to rust. Make sure the skillet is completely dry before storing.
