How to Avoid Marks When Applying Semi-Gloss Paint

    • 1). Prime any areas of the wall that you have repaired. If you put down joint compound or other filler or surface compound, prime it once it is dry. If you don't, paint absorption can differ and cause flashing.

    • 2). Cut in first. Use the brush to get corners and around trim. Either let that dry, or begin rolling into it immediately.

    • 3). Use consistent smooth strokes when you brush. A smooth stroke, gradually lifting off the surface as you go up, will help eliminate any drips.

    • 4). Roll with care, covering a limited area with each roll. This will help avoid roller lap marks (lines where the edge of the roller leaves a mark). A square yard is about right. Use even pressure. Lift the roller off the wall on each stroke gradually, continuing the motion in the direction you are rolling.

    • 5). Keep a wet edge. Once you begin a wall, go all the way, and don't stop until you reach a natural break like a corner or wall end. If you let an area in the middle of a wall dry, then try to start rolling again, you may see flashing or an inconsistent surface in the overlapped area.

    • 6). Avoid going into areas you missed while working. This can cause flashing. If you miss a spot, wait till the semigloss paint is dry. Touch it up with a soft brush.
