How to Grow Timothy Grass

8
    • 1). Apply a starter fertilizer that is high in phosphorous to the surface of the topsoil. Do not mix it into the dirt, just lay it on top. Make sure that the starter fertilizer does not contain any weed-killing ingredients, because they will stop your seeds from rooting.

    • 2). Sprinkle the timothy grass seeds on top of the prepared soil, making sure to follow the instructions on the seed bag so that you don't put out too many or too few per square foot. If there are no guidelines, aim for 16 to 22 seeds per square foot.

    • 3). Rake the seeds gently into the topsoil, taking care not to mash them in or scatter them too much.

    • 4). Put a thin layer of sawdust or peat moss--1/8 to 1/4-inch--on top of the seeds to keep them from drying out, being blown away or being eaten by birds.

    • 5). Give your timothy grass seeds a gentle but thorough spray of water. Don't use a high-pressure hose because you don't want the seeds to wash away.

    • 6). Set out the lawn stakes every three or four feet. Tie the twine securely to the first one, and then string it from one to the next, until the whole lawn is cordoned off. A staple or two should be enough to hold the twine in place. Tie the scraps of colored cloth to the twine, to remind people not to step or trip on the twine.

    • 7). Lightly spray the lawn two to three times a day for the next three to four weeks, so that your timothy grass seeds will sprout and put down healthy roots.
