In 2010, the world is exploring alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuel. One of the fuels explored is hydrogen. Unfortunately, hydrogen is not as powerful as gasoline or natural gas. Hydrogen production and distribution is in its infancy, and the U.S. Department of Energy states that the distribution infrastructure is not yet fully developed. Research is being done, however, since hydrogen is used for fuel cells, which are a type of battery. Furthermore, hydrogen also is used for various industrial and food uses, necessitating transportation of bulk quantities. - On October 13, 2010, "Bloomberg Businessweek" reported that Air Products and Chemicals Inc., a provider of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services, is going to build the world's longest hydrogen pipeline. The network will be about 180 miles long, and it will connect various stations between Louisiana and Texas. Air Products stated that by the time the pipeline is completed, it will be 600 miles in length. The estimated completion time is in the middle of 2012.
- The "Hartford Courant " reported that SunHydro, a chain of privately funded fuel stations that provide hydrogen power, will open its first hydrogen filling station in October of 2010 in Wallingford, Connecticut. This is the first of many stations planned along the east coast. The stations will allow motorists with hydrogen vehicles to drive from Florida to Maine.
- In October 2010 , "The Wall Street Journal" online reported that the Linde Corp., a utility and heavy construction contractor, will supply BMW with hydrogen at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant. Linde has built state of the art production facilities and will set up six fueling stations throughout the plant. BMW will convert 85 vehicles that use lead acid batteries to hydrogen. The hydrogen will be used to power fuel cells in the vehicles. Fuel cells are a type of batter that produce electricity by using hydrogen.
