Deer manikin shoulder mounts are polystyrene foam forms that duplicate the animal's bone and muscle structure. A taxidermist covers the forms with the deer’s head, neck and shoulder hide (and antlers) for display after they have been preserved. While there are dozens of combinations, there are only three basic positions. The position you choose for your head mounting will mostly have to do with where on the wall you want to hang the mount. - The upright position, also called full alert, simulates a deer highly attentive to its surroundings, watching for danger. There are five different combinations of the full upright position: upright full forward, half turn left, half turn right, quarter turn left and quarter turn right.
- The sneak position is meant to simulate a buck sneaking though the woods, either trying to elude danger or trailing a doe in heat. In the sneak position mount the deer has its head down with the top of its skull set just below its shoulders. This can be a good choice if you have very low ceilings. Different combinations of the sneak position are straight forward, half and quarter turn left and right.
- In the semi sneak, also called the semi upright, the head is mounted with the eyes in line with the tops of the shoulders. This position is a combination of the upright and the sneak. It simulates the posturing bucks do with each other in the prelude to a fight. Like the sneak, the semi sneak also has five positions.
