How to Select a Deer Hunting Area

    • 1). Select a deer hunting spot. It can be very simple to find if you have an idea of where the deer go for food. In the Midwest, farms are the best spots, as food is most abundant. In areas without farming, look for mast crops (acorns, beechnuts, clover, grassy areas) and sources of water.

    • 2). Look for natural funnel areas. A funnel is an area that provides cover to allow the deer to move from their bedding area to the food source, and back again. Some of the best funnel areas are wooded fence rows separating property lines, or farming fields.

    • 3). Determine the direction of the wind. Even the best hunting areas can be disrupted by the wind carrying your scent to the wily nose of a deer. If the wind is from a direction that will carry your scent to where the deer are traveling, do not hunt in that area until the wind direction is favorable.

    • 4). Know how to use either a bow or a rifle before undertaking this hunting sport.
