The Feminist Hullaballoo

23
I did wear my leather vest, Hey I brought it all the way from New York and it was Saturday night. The same night as the dyke march in SF, where I had spent the last 11 years. The leather was my way of feeling connected to my second home. I called my friends on Saturday and they were all at the SF dyke march in Dolores Park, missing me, and I them.

Margie Adam Sings

Pianist singer songwriter Margie Adam sang on Saturday night.

Her show went off without a hitch and for those of you who don’t know Margie, she was one of the “fab four” lesbian feminists performers from the W. Coast, who were around in the 70’s. (Along with Meg Christian, Cris Williamson and Holly Near.) She sings this song about being committed to the struggle, “I’m in it for the long haul.” She’s still fighting the fight in 2007. It rang true for me, since I have been working for lesbian feminist culture since 1983.
The day started with a surprise showing of ONE FINE DAY a film by Martha Wheelock. The film is a series of photos put to a wonderful song One Fine Day by Kay Weaver. It’s photos and clips of all kinds of women from all over the world, and also famous women who because of them “Our road is little easier” and “Sister take my hand, it’s with you I make my stand and I’ll be all I can one fine day.” I cry every time I see it and cheer the loudest for Billie Jean King who was my idol growing up. Just one of the many surprises handled by the now crack technical team, who now included Suzanne Bellamy as my stage assistant.

Sunday was filled with appreciation and a grand finale led by Afia Walking Tree. Afia is an African-American drummer/singer songwriter from the Bay Area. She helped raise the roof, something Sonia and Jade the producers wanted to happen. Everyone left tired yet exclaiming our lives were changed forever. Let’s do it again in 2008.

Retts Scauzillo is a lesbian feminist stage manager living in New York. She would like to give thanks to Alix Dobkin and Suzanne Bellamy for their contributions to this article.
