    Elements & Principles of Graphic Design

    • All graphic design programs have coursework that covers the basics of graphic design---subjects such as color, type, lines, shape, mass, and texture. Each of these subjects is covered separately and as they relate together in page architecture. Principles of graphic design cover placement of elements, their balance and alignment, and how proximity changes the relationship to the big picture of the design. Repetition, movement, and the importance of consistency in the design is covered, as well as contrast, white space, and unity in design placement.

    Typography

    • A broad overview of letterform history and diversity is covered to allow students an understanding of how lettering affects packaging and textual communication. Text layout and information hierarchy is covered. Some outstanding examples of typographical elements are examined for their effectiveness. Students are assigned different projects to experiment with the expressive facets of typography and product identity.

    Digital Design & Web Tools

    • Coursework covers contemporary digital design, using interactive media and motion graphics. Image capture and creation, manipulation, and integration of still images using current industry software is discussed. Part of the coursework covers 3D animation for digital media, audio, and video. Courses in the design of websites from a graphics viewpoint, Photoshop and Web effects allow students to practice web design techniques.

    Print Media

    • Coursework discusses graphic design aspects of various publications, such as newsletters, magazines, brochures, and posters. Concepts relating to target audiences are covered, as well as how visual formats create effective communications. Student projects may be included in school media outlets.

    Package Design & Identity

    • How product packaging is prepared and designed is an important part of graphic design coursework. Students study elements of "branding" and product marketing to give them a view of how graphic design is used in real-life situations. Contemporary branding is examined in depth, and students are given their own product identity projects.

    Additional Coursework

    • English language courses are also required for degree and certificate programs in graphic design. Many graphic design programs also include business courses.
