    Nouns

    • After teaching students that a noun is a person, place or thing, allow them to practice identifying nouns. Create headings using these three categories and write different nouns on index cards. Mix the cards up and ask students to categorize the nouns under the correct headings.

The Internet-based Balloon Noun Game challenges students to identify nouns. Students are shown balloons with words on them. The object of the game is to only click the balloons that have nouns written on them.

    Pronouns

    • Once students can identify pronouns, they can play games using them. Write phrases on sentence strips and ask students to identify the pronoun. Another version of this game is to create sentences that require students to replace the noun with an appropriate pronoun. Both versions are an oral game that can be played as a whole class by dividing the class into two teams. The teacher can read or display the sentence strip and then ask one student from team A to answer. Then, reading a different sentence, the teacher can do the same thing for team B. When a student answers correctly, her team gets a point. The team with the most points wins the game.

    Verbs

    • After students learn that a verb is a word that shows action, use a board game to reinforce identifying them. ESL Galaxy has a printable board game teachers can use to play a game identifying verbs. After rolling the dice, students move the amount of spaces indicated. Then, the student needs to verbally use the word they land on in two sentences. The person who reaches finish first wins the game. An alternative way to play this game is to pair students and give them a bingo chip as a marker. Give students pre-written sentences using the words from the board and ask them to identify the verb in the sentence. If they get the verb right, they can cover the word on the board with their chip. The person who has the most words covered wins the game.

    Adjectives

    • Adjectives are words that describe nouns. Web-based game the "Adjective Detective" challenges students to identify adjectives by placing the detective's magnifying glass over the adjectives in a given sentence. Each sentences contains at least one adjective. Once students complete level one of the game, they move on to play level two. The game is over when both levels have been completed.
