Low Intensity Laser Therapy: Healing at the Speed of Light

41
Low intensity laser therapy is a revolutionary new treatment that has taken the medical world by storm. The discovery of therapeutic lasers go back well over half a century as scientists attempted to ascertain how light itself could be used in a specific manner for healing purposes. The use of high intensity lasers is well known in the fields of surgery for precise procedures throughout the body. However, low intensity lasers do not have the ability to heat skin tissues
enough to burn or cut through them. They do have the ability to stimulate the skin cells as well as underlying soft tissue cells in a natural way. The FDA has approved low intensity laser for the use in the therapeutic healing of chronic pain conditions involving muscles, ligaments, bones, joints, etc.

In my own use of low intensity laser over the last 8 years, I have seen the use of laser go from strictly pain conditions to the use for everything from repair of muscle tissue to bone healing to allergy elimination. A few cases come to mind that show the power of low intensity laser use.

A middle-aged woman came to my office with pain and lack of movement of her shoulder due to an avulsion fracture of her arm. Her orthopedist had put her in a sling and informed her that her activity would be limited for the next 3 months as she healed the bone. An avid swimmer, she could not accept this as her only answer. As I evaluated her condition and agreed with her orthopedist, I began to wonder about what low intensity laser could do in terms of her healing time. Recent research experiments had shown significant bone growth and healing with the low intensity laser. We both agreed to give it a try as there were no adverse effects that laser could produce. After 10 laser therapy treatments, she returned to her swimming within 1 month with little to no pain. Upon re-exam by her orthopedist, including x-ray follow up, the bone was clearly healed. What should have taken at least 2 months to heal took an amazing 1 month to fully
heal. This is just a great example of the healing energy produced by the low intensity laser.

I witnessed another example of the regenerative quality of the low intensity laser in a patient who was a previous paraplegic from a 20 year-old spinal cord injury. He had rehabilitated himself to a significant level but still had right leg paresthesia with the feeling of pins and needles in the leg. This sensation was constant and burdened him throughout the day. He had accepted this as a permanent condition as told to him by his neurologist since the spinal injury. The use of low intensity laser on his leg as well as his spine has caused a great reduction in the symptoms to the point where he can go for a significant period of time without symptoms. This is far from a permanent condition. His continued use of the laser will undoubtedly lead to further healing of the nerve condition into his leg.

These cases are but a mere glimpse into the therapeutic power of the low intensity laser, and I suspect that further research and use of the laser will lead to far greater discoveries for the use of low intensity laser therapy. To gain a greater technical understanding of how laser therapy works, the following information highlights the effects of low intensity lasers and describes the detailed activity that laser produces within the body.
