The Difference Between Internet Explorer 7 & 8
- The Web Slices feature is one component of Internet Explorer 8 that is not available to Internet Explorer 7 users. The feature allows you to keep up with frequently updated sites without having to actually visit those sites. When visiting a site that has a Web Slice, a green Web Slice icon appears in the Command Bar. Clicking on this icon allows you to subscribe to the site and places a tab for the site at the top of your browser. Whenever new information becomes available on any of your subscribed sites, its tab will become highlighted, and clicking on it opens a box featuring the updated information. This feature is particularly useful when trying to keep up with an online auction, for example.
- Internet Explorer 8 also introduced the InPrivate browsing feature, which you can turn off and on whenever you want. Once you turn it on, any data, such as cookies and temporary files accumulated during that browsing session, will be deleted without deleting any data accumulated while you had InPrivate browsing turned off.
- Internet Explorer 8 allows users to group multiple tabs, whereas Internet Explorer 7 does not. A new anti-phishing filer, called the Smart filter, also makes Internet Explorer 8 more secure than Internet Explorer 7.
- Internet Explorer 8 helps users recognize when they are visiting deceptive sites by highlighting a site's domain name in the URL address bar. The domain name appears in black, distinguishing it from all other characters in the URL, which appear in gray.
- Internet Explorer 8 offers users the option of reopening their previous browsing session following a computer crash or after they accidentally close the browser. Internet Explorer 7 does not offer this option.
