Since March 2007, Windows Live Messenger has given its instant messenger users the opportunity to do something good while they chat with friends and family.
The IM Initative allows Windows Live Messenger users to select a charity from a list of worthy causes to benefit from donation dollars amassed with every IM sent.

Getting Started on Windows Live Messenger
The first step to joining the IM Initiative on Windows Live Messenger is to press the nickname bar at the top of the main window and click "Options" from the drop-down menu.
In the first field, under "Display Name," add one of the following codes next to your name:
The field should read something like this when you are done: "Name *naf"
After typing in your charity code, an IM Initiative logo will pop up next to your name on Windows Live Messenger confirming you have successfully entered the code.
If you do not see the Windows Live Messenger IM Initiative logo, check the code for spelling errors and try again.
Click "Apply," then "Ok" to return to the main window and start sending instant messages with Windows Live Messnger.
Remember, each time you send an IM, Windows Live Messenger will give a percentage of their advertising revenue to the charity of your choice.
