How to Rig for Snapper

34
    • 1). Slip line from the reel up through each of the rod guides in order and out through the tip.

    • 2). Tie the main line to the loop on one end of the wire spreader using a clinch knot. An illustration of the clinch knot is linked in the resources section.

    • 3). Insert the loop of line on the end of a snelled hook through the wire loop on the end of one of the two wire spreaders that extend on the wire rig. One spreader wire hangs higher on the rig than the other, which is near the bottom. A snelled hook is simply a fishing hook pre-tied with a length of line looped at one end.

    • 4). Push the hook through the loop on the end of the snell and draw tight to secure the line and hook to the wire spreader. Add a second snelled hook in the same manner to the second wire spreader.

    • 5). Open the snap at the bottom of the wire spreader to attach a sinker weight using the wire loop at the top of the weight, then close the snap. The snap opens and closes in the same way as a safety pin. Choose a heavier weight to get the rig down deep and hold it in the desired position in choppy waves and strong currents.

    • 6). Rig each of the two hooks preferably with a live squid by baiting the two fins through the middle with the point of the hook. The triangular fins are on the opposite end from the tentacles. Baiting through the fins will not impede the squid's swimming ability. Squid strips may be used if live squid are unavailable. Rig one end of the strip so the remainder can flutter in the water.
