How to Draw a Large Flying Dragon

20
    • 1). Sketch the outline of your dragon on poster board. A good rule of thumb is to draw your dragon sketch on your poster board, leaving three to four inches of space between your drawing and the edge of the poster board. Draw the outline of your dragon in pencil. Keep the lines light if you plan to color your dragon. Make them darker if this will be a pencil sketch.

    • 2). Begin your line where the tip of your dragon's tail will be and draw the top portion of the tail, leading to the dragon's back. The back will have a slight hump to it. Lift your pencil from the back once you've finished it, then begin a line for the neck that extends up toward the top of the poster board. Curve this line slightly as you begin drawing your dragon's head, which will be a rough circle at the top of this curved line.

    • 3). Draw the underside of the head and continue with a line leading away from the head. This is the lower portion of the dragon's neck. Bring this line all the way back toward where you began drawing the tail, connecting this bottom line with the tail to complete the main portion of the dragon's body.

    • 4). Sketch your dragon's wings. The wings should extend away from the body. Draw a straight line for the top of the wings and make large arches to form the shape of the bottom of the wings. Looking at a bat's wings or an image of a flying dragon may be helpful as you form your dragon's wings.

    • 5). Draw four cylinder shapes for your dragon's legs, then use your eraser to remove the lines as you develop the legs. The legs should basically be fat and cylindrical, but not perfectly formed. Draw three or four claws on the end of each of these legs.

    • 6). Draw an oval or circle for your dragon's eye. This is a side view, so you will only need to draw one. Draw lines to form the mouth of your dragon and bring them to a forked point, then add two arch shapes at the end of the nose for the nostrils.

    • 7). Pencil scales over your dragon's body (not on the wings). Make the scales by drawing small arches over the dragon's body. When you color your dragon, these pencil lines should show through. Lightly shade the dragon's wings with pencil using side to side strokes. This pencil shading will show through the color as well, giving the wings some texture.

    • 8). Color your dragon's body with dark green marker. Add a little black when you are finished to give the coloring a more reptilian characteristic. Color the wings with a different shade of green or even brown, keeping the overall tone of the color dark.
