List of Things to Have When Expecting a Litter of Puppies
Here are some essentials for the correct care and healthy nurturing of your new puppies.
A Whelping box or a whelping area away from the hustle and bustle of family and away from other pets.
When mom delivers her puppies she can get aggressive towards people and other pets, so please make sure her whelping box is in an area where she doesn't feel the need to always be on guard.
She needs her rest.
Having a litter of puppies is hard work.
Carpets for the whelping area, clean remnants are perfect.
Make sure you have a few so you can wash them and use them again.
Make sure the carpets are big enough to cover the whole whelping box.
Carpet also is great for giving puppies the much need traction to promote strong bones in their legs.
Heat lamp or a heating pad for pets, to keep mom and babies warm.
Make sure the pups and mom can get away from the heat if they get too warm.
80 degrees is a good temperature to have the whelping box when they are first born.
Puppies need to be kept around 75 degrees until they are several months old.
Scissors, infant nose suction, clean towels to help with cleaning a pup if mom can't.
Scissors are needed for cutting the cord, leave 3 inches of the cord from the stomach.
When a pup is delivered mom usually licks it clean, but if she doesn't or can't, pick the puppy up and tear and remove the sack, Run the scissors under boiling water to disinfect and let it cool before using it.
Use the nose suction to pull all the mucus from the puppy's nose.
Dry the puppies with clean towels.
Supporting the puppy in your hand, sling the puppy downward to remove any mucus that the nose suction couldn't get.
Esbilac Puppy formula just in case mom doesn't have enough milk or you have a weak pup that needs supplementing.
If a puppy doesn't gain weight, is weak or seems fussy and unhappy try giving it a bottle of warm Esbilac milk.
If it actually gets excited when it gets milk you know for sure it was hungry.
De-wormer.
You will need to start de-worming the pups and mom at around 2 weeks of age, so have some on hand.
I use liquid Nemex.
Worm your puppies at 2,4,6,8, weeks of age.
The last worming I use Drontal Plus to make sure all the types of worms are taken care of.
Enjoy your puppies!!
