How to Modify Hiking Packs
- 1). Unzip your pack all the way. Invert the pack if possible. Brush tent floor sealant to the inside of the pack. Allow it to sit for about 48 hours to be sure it is thoroughly dry.
- 2). Line the interior of the pack with heavy-duty garbage bags if you choose not to use the tent floor sealant. Unzip and open your pack. Measure the interior dimensions of you pack--each side, the front, and the back as well as the bottom. Cut pieces of the trash bag to size.
- 3). Fix each piece of the trash bag to the appropriate section of the interior of your pack with a heavy duty glue--rubber cement is a good option. Apply tent floor sealant to the seams to fully seal any potential holes.
- 1). Unzip your pack and determine how many internal divisions you'd like to add.
- 2). Measure the dimensions of the internal division and add about an inch to the measurements. This will ensure you have enough fabric to sew it firmly in place.
- 3). Fix the fabric division inside the bag and attach the sides with straight pins. Sew the fabric to the pack with thread the same color as the pack.
- 1). Cut a piece of fabric from a hardy material--wool or denim will work. Cut the fabric about 2 inches wide and 6 inches long. Fold the fabric together the long way so you have a thinner 6-inch long piece. Pin the fabric in place with straight pins.
- 2). Thread a needle with a thick thread that is four times the length of the fabric strip. Pull the thread all the way through the needle until one end meets the other. Tie a knot at the bottom so the two ends are joined. Sew the fabric.
- 3). Re-thread the needle if you used up all the thread. Choose an area on your pack where you'd like the option to hang an extra light water bottle, keys or any other small item from a carabiner. Sew one end of the fabric firmly onto that area. Sew the other end about 1/2 inch to 1 inch away. You should now have a strong loop. Repeat these steps to add as many loops as necessary.
