How to Hike Mt. Washington

10
    • 1). Pre-plan your itinerary. But at the same time, allow room for unexpected changes, such as changes in the weather. Weather changes can be erratic at Mt. Washington. Also include a "turn around time." Hiking in Mt. Washington at night increases the chance of a slip and fall. If you have prepared for a full day hike, set a time when you will turn back. You want to make sure that your hike down is still during daylight hours. If you're planning to stay overnight, be sure that you start looking for a place to camp long before the night falls. Mt. Washington has restrictions on where people can camp within the forest. For example, camping at the mountain's summit is strictly prohibited. Waiting until you're tired or when it's dark, may cause you to forget, miss or ignore the park's rules and safety hazards.

    • 2). Purchase your hiking supplies. Supplies include a compass, hiking gear and a first aid kit. Dubbed as being "Home of the World's Worst Weather" with high winds, snowstorms and freezing cold temperatures, a hike on Mt. Washington requires appropriate clothing and outerwear. Ideally, you should buy a Mt. Washington guidebook, such as the AMC White Mountain Guide or National Geographic-Trails Illustrated, both of which include detailed maps and trail descriptions of Mt. Washington.

    • 3). Look into your parking options. If you choose one of the more popular trails such as Huntington or Tuckerman Ravine, Boot Spur Trails and Lion Head, you can park at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. Pinkham Notch also offers lodging and meals as well as volunteers who help with trail conditions, trip planning and more.

    • 4). Inquire about a parking pass. Depending on where you park you many need one. Since Mount Washington is located in a US National Forest, most trailheads require visitors to purchase a parking pass. Prices for parking passes vary but visitors can purchase both daily and annual passes. The Pinkham Notch Visitor Center does not require a pass.
