Plant Care for Kong Coleus

11
    • 1). Place Kong Coleus in full shade and plant in well-drained soil, either in a container, or in a garden bed, using plenty of organic matter to improve drainage and retain needed nutrients.

    • 2). Add peat moss, grass clippings, fertilizer, bark, leaves or compost so that one-third of the total soil mix is composed of organic matter, according to the Mississippi State Office of Agricultural Communication. Till organic matter into a garden bed about 6 inches deep.

    • 3). Increase watering in mid to late summer months and provide ample shade to retain the bright colors of the Kong Coleus foliage.

    • 4). Grow from seed by planting eight to ten weeks before the last frost in your zone. Increase fullness and heartiness of the plant by pinching off flowers as soon as they appear.

    • 5). Propagate new plants using the cutting method. Cut a healthy leaf stalk at its base, apply a powdered root hormone if desired and set in rich, well-drained soil. Place indoors in a well-lit area out of direct sun. Keep moist until new growth is apparent and then water every three to five days.
