Global Warming Could Turn Lake Tahoe Green
Lake Tahoe is a popular tourist destination in Northern California for its beautiful vistas and skiing.
Being on the border with Nevada, Lake Tahoe is also a very popular destination for the casual gambler on football Sunday.
Global warming, many scientists believe, will cause a multitude of problems around the Earth; from melting ice in the Arctic to the deaths of endangered species to the flooding of coastal cities.
In Lake Tahoe, an environmental engineer from the University of California, Riverside has just surmised that global warming will lead to the growth of algae in the area which will then cause the water to appear green.
The algae growth is said to exist because of an increase in Phosphorous that is now currently locked in the sediment on the lake's bottom.
If it is dispelled into the lake, grim consequences may be at stake.
Lakes around the world are experiencing trouble.
Lake Biwa, for example, had a warm winter and a hotter than usual summer which led to the deaths of many ducks due to algae and the deaths of fish due to a lack of oxygen at the bottom of the lake.
Environmental issues follow the domino effect.
First, it is one thing that gets impacted, say an increase in Phosphorous in the ocean.
Then that leads to an increase in algae.
Then the toxins from the algae lead to a death in the wildlife and a growth in wildlife that is friendly to algae.
Fish begin to die.
And then bacteria in the lake grows due to the dying off of fish that may have ordinarily eaten it.
