Problems Starting the Chevy Duramax
- The fuel filter on the Chevrolet Duramax, which screens out rust, dirt and other sediment from the diesel fuel, can clog over time and result in problems starting the engine. Replacing the fuel filter typically resolves the starting problem.
- Chevrolet Duramax glow plugs, or devices in the engine prechambers that generate heat to help start the engine, can produce less heat over time, resulting in starting problems. Replacing any weak glow plugs should enable proper Chevrolet Duramax starting.
- The starter solenoid in a Chevrolet Duramax, which receives electrical current from the ignition switch when turned on and closes a pair of contacts, enabling a charge to be sent to the starter motor, can short out due to excess current. Check the solenoid for damage and replace it as needed.
